You may have noticed that you’ve received this email a full 24 hours early… and there’s a good reason for that.
Because… If I sent my email the same time, I do each week, then it will land in Australia on Christmas Day and in North America on Christmas Eve… and I would never expect you to read my email during the holiday.
So, I thought the best solution was to send it a day early.
Of course, there will be plenty of marketers and gurus who have their emails on auto deliver… and our inboxes will be bombarded no matter what day it is.
For them… it’s just another opportunity to try to sell us something. As you know, I’m not like that and it’s probably to my detriment.
But I always like to consider what people are doing in their day to day lives… and not doing. And I hope what they are not doing is looking at emails over the holidays.
There are hundreds of other opportunities throughout the year to sell to people… can’t we just miss one day. And what about all the days that are sacred to other people? Let’s miss those ones too.
Right now, there’s a huge shift in what people will and won’t put up with.
Years ago, our inboxes used to be a sacred place that contained emails from people we wanted to hear from. And we would only give our email to people we trusted.
But then our emails were expected as “payment” to be on lists and receive their over inflated goodies… and they were abused and overused. And now I see a return to people being more protective of who they allow in their inbox.
People are now resistant to giving out their email in exchange of ordinary things (smart marketers will always ask for a person’s “best email”). And the reason for the resistance is, in the past, they’ve been disappointed.
What a lot of marketers and business owners don’t realise is, when someone gives us their email, they have just given us permission to appear in their inbox. And that’s a privilege not a right.
Call me old fashioned, but I like to be respectful of that.
Because this simply comes down to…
Knowledge Nugget #227:
Market To Others The Way You’d
Like To Be Marketed To
Ok… so I paraphrased the good old “Do unto others as they would do unto you” but this versatile phrase rings true here.
I’m sure I’ll get some “blow back” from my colleagues about my controversial philosophy… but I’m not worried. We all have our own view of the world. (And as we all know… my perspective of the world is way different than most peoples.)
That fact is… our society is changing and so are consumers.
Consumers are no longer putting up with:
- Being treated like a cash cow
- Old sleazy ways of selling
- Being disrespected
- Being treated like an idiot
- Getting ripped off
- Having their inboxes filled with rubbish
Which means, as the consumer changes… we need to change as well.
As business owners and marketers, we can do better. And we need to do better.
The bare minimum effort is no longer good enough.
Doing what’s expected… isn’t even good enough.
Now days, we need to exceed people’s expectations.
Think about how you would like to be treated… and then treat other people the same way.
And that’s why I won’t email people on their holiday.
It’s because I won’t be checking my emails on Christmas day… and you shouldn’t be expected to check yours either.
I don’t think there is anything that anyone could email me that would make me sacrifice a single second with my loved ones.
And the same goes for social media. I’ll spend a little bit of time connecting with friends and family that I can’t spend time with… but that’s it. Most of my day will be spent in the moment with family. And I can’t wait!
After the year I’ve had, with unexpected and painful losses… I know that life is unpredictable and despite my best efforts… I may never get the chance to be with the ones I love like that again. I intend to cherish every moment I get. And I hope you get to cherish every moment you get.
So, wherever you are and however you spend the next few days… have a wonderful time and I’ll catch you next week.
Until next week, stay awesome, stay safe and enjoy yourself : )

P.S. Can you believe it’s 2020 next week? Next week, you’ll receive my email 24 hours early again. That way we can all enjoy celebrating the new year and the new decade.
P.P.S. Sometimes it’s good to go against the “flow.” That’s the beauty of being in business for ourselves, we get to do things our way in accordance with our values. You may not agree with everything I said in my email… and that’s ok. Because that’s how you do your business, and this is how I do mine ; )
P.P.P.S. It’s NOW AVAILABLE on Amazon… here’s the link to get Drayton Bird’s Book (https://youdidwhat.co.uk/). I’ve already ordered my copy. I can’t wait till the postman brings it.
