When you say “Yes” to one thing… You automatically say “No” to everything else!
Seems basic, but it’s not. Because basic isn’t necessarily simple or easy.
Now to be clear, this isn’t about holding out for a better job or client. Or waiting around for something better to come up.
No, this is about not working with people who don’t respect or appreciate the value you bring with you. In a nutshell, is all about discernment.
If you say “yes” to a client who is trying to “Low Ball” you (industry speak for trying to get the lowest and most unrealistic price they can from you)… you won’t have time for a client who will pay you what you ask for and love doing it.
When it comes to “Low Ball” prospects (they are not clients!), there are usually massive red flags trying to warn you away from taking the job. But I found myself saying “Yes” because I had a hard time saying “No” (especially when you need the money or there is a promise of a “mind blowing, career making” opportunity… by the way, beware of these special “magic beans”… they never grow, no matter what you do!)
I saw a quote on a friends Facebook wall, which went something like… “when you wear “rose coloured” glasses you’ll see red flags as normal flags”. This made me think of all the times I accepted clients even when I knew I shouldn’t. It usually blew up in my face and I always ended up regretting it 🙁
I’m sure I’m not alone here though. From what I hear, most professional copywriters have done it. The important thing to get from the experience is not to do it again.
